calico ghost town

on long road trips, i've been known to beg doug to stop at certain historical sites (cove fort, rock-a-hoola water park, the outlet malls) but he always says "no" or accidentally misses the exit. well, 72nd time's a charm because on the way back to st. george from our "apartment hunting" trip we moseyed on over to calico ghost town!!!

i have fond childhood memories of a ghost town my family and i went to when i was a small child. or maybe i'm thinking of an episode of the brady bunch i watched as a small child. either way, i love old historical places. they're so creepy/cool.

it was VERY HOT. i can't imagine what it would have been like to live there when it was actually a town. no water. no AC. just a silver mine. and boredom.

i was somewhat disappointed to find that most of the buildings were replicas, and that most of them were just gift shops trying to sell me poorly-made souvenirs with "Calico" written on them with a sharpie.

they also really played up the "ghost" part of ghost town. skeletons and coffins and cobwebs everywhere. (the cobwebs were real, though, and i think an unintentional byproduct of a lack of upkeep)

so there you have it! doug's first ghost town experience. possibly last. we'll see!

p.s. we also stopped at 2 outlet malls. was this my lucky day or what?

don't let the lack of comments distract from how great this post really is.
